Deep within the forest at night, where the shadows of the trees seem almost liquid, a figure may sometimes emerge that is no longer entirely human, yet not completely wolf.

In the Slavic lands, it is known as the vukodlak or wilkołak.

According to local legends, a person may be transformed into a wolf by a witch’s spell, a cursed wolfskin or a curse carried from birth. The curse may arise from the sins of the parents, a broken oath or the child being conceived at a time considered ill-fated.

Some, however, choose the transformation willingly.

The stories tell of people wearing magical belts, covering themselves in wolfskins or jumping over knives placed upon a tree stump struck by lightning. After completing the ritual, they no longer return from the forest as mere humans. Something wild and dark awakens within them, growing stronger with every passing night.

In wolf form, they attack livestock without mercy and sometimes turn upon humans as well. On certain festival nights or nights of unusual darkness, they are said to creep into villages, leaving terror and destruction behind them.

Even their human form cannot always conceal their true nature. They are often unusually hairy, with restless, feral eyes and something unmistakably animal hidden within their movements. By morning, many remember nothing of what they did during the night.

Only bloodstained clothing, claw marks and barefoot tracks leading home from the forest reveal that the curse has taken control once again.

Some Slavic legends paint an even darker picture.

In certain regions, people believed that the curse of the vukodlak did not end with death. If the soul of the cursed person failed to find peace, it could return as a restless demonic being. It was no longer merely a wolf-shaped predator, but a supernatural calamity intertwined with other monsters of the night.

It does not hunt only in the forest.

It prowls along the edges of villages, bringing illness, nightmares and unexplained deaths in its wake. Dogs begin to howl at its presence, animals grow restless, and the darkness seems to linger between the houses longer than it should.

It is whispered that anyone who once answers the call of the wilderness can never fully return to the world of humankind. Even if they regain their human form, a part of the forest remains within them forever.

Very different stories are told in the Irish region of Ossory.

There, the descendants of ancient warriors carrying the blood of Laignech Fáelad suffer beneath the curse of Saint Natalis. Every seven years, one man and one woman are forced to assume the form of wolves and spend seven long years living in the wilderness.

These Celtic werewolves retain their human intelligence and the ability to speak even while in wolf form. They are not wild animals controlled only by instinct, but human souls trapped inside unfamiliar bodies, wandering through the forest.

According to a medieval chronicle, a priest once encountered a talking wolf deep within the woods. The creature asked him to help his dying companion. When the priest followed, he found a she-wolf lying among the trees.

The male wolf drew back the fur covering his companion, revealing a human body beneath.

The dying woman was then able to receive the last rites.

The werewolves of Ossory are therefore not always savage monsters. More often, they are tragic beings who remember their former lives, their loved ones and even their human names. They long to return to their homes, but the curse refuses to release them.

Yet both traditions preserve the same ancient fear.

The forest and the wilderness are their domain. They hide among the trees, follow the tracks of their victims and only rarely venture close to human settlements.

When they do, however, the boundary between human and animal begins to disappear.

And anyone who wanders too deeply into the forest at night may not return as the same person who entered it.
