Undine – The Spirit Bound to Water

There are spirits that haunt the world because they are unable to leave it behind.

Undine, however, never truly belonged to it in the first place.

Old alchemical writings place her among the water elementals – beings capable of taking human form and experiencing desire, affection and jealousy, yet lacking a soul in the way humans understand it.

Perhaps that is exactly why human closeness attracts them so deeply.

Undine is most often seen near lakes, springs and ancient wells. Her appearance resembles that of a young woman, but anyone who watches her for long soon notices that something is not quite right. Her hair drifts even when there is no wind. Her skin is pale and slightly translucent, while her features seem to shift constantly with the movement of the water.

Sometimes she does not reveal herself at all.

Only a quiet song can be heard through the mist.

A woman’s face appears beneath the surface for a fleeting moment.

Or someone looks into a lake and feels that beside their own reflection, another figure is staring back.

Stories say that not every Undine is the same. Spirits of deep lakes are often described as quiet and melancholic, while those bound to springs are sometimes remembered as healers. Those who dwell within forgotten wells, however, may spend centuries in solitude – and among them are said to be the most dangerous.

Yet all of them share the same longing.

To understand what it truly means to live.

Later legends claim that an Undine may gain a soul by forming a bond with a human. For her, love is therefore more than a simple emotion. It is something far deeper: a passage between two worlds, through which a being born of water may, for a brief moment, become human.

That is why her loyalty can be so powerful.

And why betrayal can be equally dangerous.

Those who earn an Undine’s love may find themselves followed, protected and comforted by her for many years. But anyone who breaks a promise made to her may discover the other nature of water.

Because the same water that gently caresses the skin can also close silently above a person’s head.

Perhaps that is why it is so difficult to tell whether Undine’s song is truly an act of seduction.

Perhaps she is simply lonely.

Perhaps she is searching for a companion.

Or perhaps within every human she is looking for the one thing that, by her very nature, she can never fully possess.

A soul willing, if only for a moment, to share with her what it feels like to be human.
